Montreal scored late and often en route to a 4-1 victory on Friday night. The win gave the Canadiens a 2-0 lead in the series.
The lower seed’s goal is to always leave with a split of the opening games, Carey Price made sure his team would leave with a sweep. The net minder made 26 saves for his 11th career playoff victory.
After an even first period, Montreal erupted in the final 40 minutes. A David Desharnais power play goal opened the scoring early in the second period. Rene Bourque extended the lead on when he split the defense to give the Habs a two goal lead.
The Lightning had chances to make it a one goal game but Price made some spectacular saves keeping his team in control. A failed power play chance late in the middle period seemed to frustrate Tampa Bay as they mounted few quality chances the rest of the contest.
Brendan Gallagher and Bourque added two more tallies in the final period to put the game out of reach. P.K. Subban added two assists in the victory.
The lone bright spot for the home team came late in the game when they ruined Price’s shutout. Teddy Purcell put home a power play goal, his first since 2011.http://
The series shifts to Quebec on Sunday night. The puck drops inside the Bell Center at 7 p.m. Eastern.
