HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – This second segment of the Stan Fischler interview traces Fischler’s very early efforts at writing for the New York Rangers Fan Club and his efforts to write about hockey for the Rangers and then the old Eastern Hockey League.
Fischler graduated from Brooklyn College in 1954 and was recruited to work for the New York Rangers.
“I was being paid to be around the game,” Fischler said. He said in this interview he was in hockey heaven.
This was his opportunity to meet the hockey writers with whom he was familiar and in some cases idolized.
The history of New York hockey sports writing is here in this interview. Having grown up in the metro area it is fascinating to hear some of these stories and the process of paying dues before getting the big gig.
There are so many lessons in this episode for any young writer. Enjoy and learn from this segment.
