Phoenix top standings

MANCHESTER, UK – MANCHESTER Phoenix are top of the English Premier League after an impressive double win over Guildford Flames. They beat the reigning champions 4-2 and 4-3 to climb above Basingstoke Bison. Last night’s dramatic overtime win came with just one minute left in the extra period. Both sides spurned powerplay opportunities until James Archer skated into Flames’ territory and slipped a superb pass for Joachim Flatten to fire home. Before then Phoenix had led until the last 54 seconds of the match. Curtis Huppe opened the scoring for Guildford just before the fifth minute to give his side a one-goal advantage heading into the first interval. But goals from Scott McKenzie and Michal Psurny put Phoenix ahead before Nathan Rempel levelled it up with less than four remaining in the second period. Phoenix dominated the third and when Tony Hand combined with Flatten for Psurny’s second they looked set for the victory – until Hemmings’ late intervention. Archer and Flatten had other ideas though to give Manchester their sixth win in a row. The result backed up a great 4-2 win in Guildford on Saturday. Phoenix outworked the reigning premiers who never gave up the fight until the final period. Psurny scored his second of the weekend at 17:14 before Huppe equalised. Captain Luke Boothroyd then put Manchester back ahead only for them to be pegged back again by Rick Plant. But late goals from Flaten – assisted by Psurny and Hand – and an empty netter from McKenzie grabbed the victory. To contact the author email: Mike.Appleton@prohockeynews.com
