Phoenix edged in Roses clash

MANCHESTER, UK – MANCHESTER Phoenix will have to overturn a one-goal deficit if they are to beat Sheffield Steeldogs on Sunday. Their first ‘War of the Roses’ challenge ahead of the new season finished 3-2 after a pulsating match at IceSheffield. It was Phoenix’ first run out after just one practice and they almost pulled off a shock. After a goalless and penalty filled first period Greg Wood scored twice for the home side before Luke Boothroyd emerged from the penalty box and pulled Phoenix back into it. Sheffield forged back ahead early in the third period through Craig Elliot but a late score from James Archer made it game on. Manchester had a number of chances in the final stages as Steeldogs’ coach Andre Payette in particular fell foul of the officials. But they couldn’t convert their chances and Sheffield – who have already played two ‘friendlies’ in pre-season – will take a slender advantage into the return leg on Sunday (5.30pm).
