OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla – The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers met in pre-season action this weekend in a neutral site contest. The home of the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL played host to the NHL match.
The Stars had four different players scoring a goal: Austin Smith, Luke Gazdic, Vern Fiddler, and Brett Ritchie.
This was the fourth NHL game to be played in Oklahoma City. A regular season “neutral site” game was played between the Oilers and New York Islanders in October 1992. This was followed by three pre-season games: the Dallas Stars versus the St. Louis Blues in September 1995; the Boston Bruins versus the St. Louis Blues in September 1997, and the Phoenix Coyotes versus the Los Angeles Kings in 2002. Visiting dignitaries from these pre-season games included: (1997) Harry Sinden, former CHL Blazers GM from the mid-1960’s era, as well as the “great one” Wayne Gretzky (2002).
Thanks to Gail Hamill for some background on the game.
