PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Sound Tigers take down Phantoms, 3-2, in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, Pa – The Bridgeport Sound Tigers scored twice in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat the Adirondack Phantoms, 3-2. Johan Sundstrom scored in the first period, while Chris Langkow and Aaron Ness lit the lamp in the third period. Anders Nilsson made 26 saves for the Sound Tigers, who earned their 10th win in the last 12 games.PHN_BSOG

Sundstrom’s goal came thanks in part to his new linemates, Joel Broda and Matthew Pistilli. Pistilli moved the puck down low to Broda, who found Sundstrom cutting to the net from the slot. Sundstrom slammed it home and gave the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Sound Tigers maintained their 1-0 lead into the second period, but Nick Cousins tied the score at 6:40 of the second. Cousins skated into the high slot and took a wrist shot. Nilsson got a piece, but not enough to keep the puck from trickling over the goal line. Cousin’s fifth of the season tied the score at one, which it remained into the third period.

Adirondack found themselves on a two-man advantage earlier in the third, and took advantage of the opportunity. Jason Akeson held the puck at the left of the net before he slid it through the crease to Chris VandeVelde. VandeVelde tapped it in from the doorstep and gave the Phantoms a 2-1 lead.

Still down a man, the Sound Tigers answered shorthanded just 22 seconds after the Phantoms took the lead. Scooter Vaughan raced into the Adirondack zone before sending a pass through the slot to Langkow. Langkow fired it home for his third goal of the season and tied the score at two.

Later in the third, the Sound Tigers scored again to regain the lead for good. Andrew Clark came into the zone on the right wing side as Ness jumped into the play. Clark sent the puck cross-ice and Ness blasted a one-timer home for the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning goal.

The Sound Tigers return home to face the Providence Bruins Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. on Matt Martin Bobblehead Giveaway Day. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Matt Martin bobblehead doll, and the former Sound Tiger and current Islander will be on-hand for autographs following the game.
