PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Missouri Mavericks @ Tulsa Oilers 12/04/12

TULSA, Okla. – The Missouri Mavericks erased a two-goal deficit and scored five third-period goals to beat the Tulsa Oilers 7-5 Tuesday night at the BOK Center in Tulsa. Seven different Mavericks scored goals and Sebastien Thinel led all scorers with a goal and three assists. The Mavericks are back to .500 and are now out of last place in the CHL with 18 points on the season. Goaltender Mike Clemente stopped 20 shots in the win for the Mavericks while Mike Garman stopped 32 of 38 shots for the Oilers.
“We have lost some games we should have won this season, but we got one back tonight,” Mavericks’ Head Coach Scott Hillman said. “The power play was big tonight; we needed those power play goals to get the win.”
Tulsa took a 2-0 lead five minutes into the second period after Michel Beausoleil scored a shorthanded goal. Both of Tulsa’s goals to that point were on special teams as Mike Ullrich had scored a power play goal at the 4:17 mark of the first period.
David Simoes hard work paid off as he scored for the Mavericks and cut the Oilers lead to 2-1 at the 9:33 mark of the second period. Kenton Miller and Colten Hayes assisted on the play, but the Mavericks weren’t finished in the second period.
John-Scott Dickson scored on a five-on-three power play to tie the game at two. It marked the first goal with the two-man advantage for the Mavericks this season.
A total of eight goals were scored in the third period and the Mavericks finally took the lead when they went ahead, 4-3, on Brandon Smith’s goal at the 5:03 mark. Thinel had tied the game at three at the 3:15 mark, and he has safely scored in nine out of the Mavericks’ last 10 games.
The Mavericks took a 5-3 lead on a goal by Kenton Miller at the 8:01 mark and Hayes earned his third assist on the play.
The teams traded goals from that point forward as Dave Pszenyczny (power play) and Blake Forsyth (empty net) scored for the Mavericks and Ben Gordon and Mike Ullrich scored for Tulsa.
The five-goal third period marked the most goals in a period for the Mavericks this season.
