MELBOURNE, Australia – The Perth Thunder came a calling to the home arena of the Melbourne Ice this weekend. In the first of a brace of games, the Ice defeated Perth 5-3 on the strength of a four-goal third period.
With the score knotted at one heading into the third, the Ice posted four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead. Jason Bacing got the scoring parade going when he potted a power play marker with less than one minute gone in the final frame. Glen Mayer, Tommy Powell and Matt Armstrong closed out the scoring for the home side.
Perth tried to make things a little more interesting with two late goals but it was too little to cause any real concern for the Ice.
Dahlen Phillips got the win in stopping 24 of 27 shots on the night. The Ice were 2 for 3 on the power play while the Thunder were dreadful going 1 for 9 with the extra skater.
