PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Ice and Mustangs tangle in local derby Mustangs drop Ice, 4-2, in win

MELBOURNE, Australia – The past weekend Melbourne local derby between the Ice and Mustangs showcased some of the best Ice Hockey in the AIHL with a sell out crowd. The first game lived up to all the expectations that supporters have come to know and love.

The first period showed strength and skill by both teams. Melbourne Ice was the first to score through Marcus Wong and Andrew Erzen.

It was not long that the Mustangs responded and scored through Jack Wolgemuth, assisted by Kevin Glanzman. At the end of the first it was 1 all.

In the second, Mustangs were able to score twice but there was no response from the Ice. There were attempts for Melbourne Ice to break even but they were not able to crack through the defense and goalie Jon Olthuis of the Mustangs.

At the end of the second Mustangs lead Ice 3-1.

Expectations for the third period were high, would Melbourne Ice come back with their experience and overcome the Mustangs or would the Mustangs be able to keep the lead and overcome Melbourne Ice.

The Ice tried many times to break through the defense of the Mustangs and they were able to hold strong and only let 1 goal in from Matt Armstrong and assisted by Jason Baclig. Mustangs were able to respond once more to have the final score 4-2.

Ice did not have enough force in their attack to break through the Mustangs defense, which will give them things to work on leading up to the finals. Melbourne Mustangs can certainly can mix it up to the top teams of the ladder.
