FORT WAYNE, Ind – The Elmira Jackals looked like they might be in hot water, when the Fort Wayne Komets jumped to an early lead, putting the Jackals down going in to the locker room after the first period. It was not for lack of effort, the Jackals pounded Komets netminder Ben Meisner in the first two minutes of play, but Meisner turned them away. The Jackals allowed the Komets to pick up a pair of points in the opening period. Defensmean Jace Coyle put both scores in the net with the first on a power play at 7:22 and the second with even strength at 11:10.
The Jackals opened the second period with a chance to score but wasted a power play away then giving the Jason Dale his first goal as a Komet. Looking for the inspiration they needed, the Jackals got just what they were looking for when Komets captain Kaleigh Schrock took the challenge from Corey Bellamy with the “let’s go signal”.
The momentum of the game took a complete 180 when former Komet Mike Vaskivou blasted home his 12th goal of the year with assists to Artem Demkov and Jakub Culek. Just a quick couple of minutes later the favor was returned when Vaski fed a center puck to Demkov, putting the Jackals within one. Culek then banked a shot over Meisner’s shoulder to tie the score a 7:34 with assists from Demekov and Vaskivou forcing the game into overtime.
The extra session gave the Jackals pipe keeper the momentum to keep the Komets out of his space. The persistance of the Jackals gave them the edge to seal the final score with a Troy Rutkowski dump that was chased down by Jordan Pietrus and handed to Dane Walters for the kill.
Vaskivuo ( 1 goal, 2 assists ) ended the night with his third straight three-point game for the Jackals while Demkov ( 1 goal, 2 assists ) and Culek ( 1 goal, 1 assist ) earned multi-point games for the second straight night.
