CINCINNATI, Ohio – As the rains subsided and the sun peeked out it magically turned to Hockey Season in the Tri-State on Saturday. I resumed my perch on Media Row to record another exciting edition of Cyclones Opening Night/First Face-Off to be played against the Wheeling Nailers.
The wonderful smell of hot dogs wafted through the US Bank Arena as the fans streamed in and gathered in groups greeting old friends and renewing acquaintances with long-time arena personnel.
The atmosphere was electric when Warm-up time arrived and the players took to the ice for the first time in what seemed like an eternity.
When game time approached the lights dimmed and the ice was bathed in the red glow of the floodlights and the entire 2013-14 squad was introduced to the 5700 plus fans in attendance.
This was again a special night as the past seasons North Division Championship banner was unfurled in the rafters,
The action unfolded quickly and the crowd cheered loudly in anticipation of the ‘Clones first goal of the new campaign. The exciting first period ended in a scoreless tie but was full of open ice hits and even a pugilistic bout by the Cyclones Anthony Luchiani against the Nailers Ryley Miller.
The home fans patience was rewarded when Luchiani scored the season’s first goal during the second period. Newcomer Scott Darling minded the home net and put on a beautiful performance in his first start. Here are the best images of this 4-2 win by the Cyclones over their West Virginia rivals.
