MELBOURNE, Australia – The Sydney Ice Dogs and New Castle North Stars made it through to the AIHL Goodall Cup Grand Finale last weekend. The weekend tournament was live streamed online and drew great attendance in Melbourne.
The opening games were merely prelude to the big match Sunday between the heavily favored teams on the ice.
The Grand Finale was a demonstration of the methodical approach that Sydney took to the tournament. In a grinding effort the Ice Dogs built a 2-1 lead after the opening first period. Billy Cliff and Todd Stephenson scored for Sydney for an early 2-0 lead. Before the period closed out Dominic Osman netted his first of the game for the North Stars to cut the lead in half.
In the second, both teams played it close but Stephenson picked up his second of the match to make it 3-1 in favor of the Dogs.
Stephenson completed the hat trick in the third when he got the game-winner early in the final stanza. Stephenson scored a short-handed goal and added two power play markers on the game.
Simon Bang scored twice to make the score 6-1
With tie winding down, Osman scored two power play goals with the second coming with less than a minute in the game as he notched the hat trick for the North Stars.
In the end, the Ice Dogs lifted the silverware to delight of their fans.
