INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – Brandon Marino scored twice, Jared Brown provided a goal and two assists and the Quad City Mallards ripped off three unanswered third period goals on the way to a 4-1 win over the host Missouri Mavericks Friday night.
Marino pounced on a rebound to snap a 1-1 tie and kick off the Mallards’ third period onslaught at 7:52 of the final frame. Brown provided some insurance by rifling the puck home from the right wing circle at 13:30. Eric Giosa finished off the Mavericks with a goal from the slot with just less than three minutes remaining. It was Marino who had gotten the Mallards off to a strong start – he scored the first goal of the game on the power play at 13:46 of the first period when his shot ricocheted off the back glass, off the top of the net and finally off Missouri goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson before crossing the goal line. Brandon Coccimiglio tied the game at one by burying Ryan Jardine’s centering pass at 10:56 of the second period, but the Mavericks would have no response to the Mallards’ third period outburst. The Mallards hosted the Mavericks on Saturday and won 3-2 in overtime. They host the Bloomington Blaze tonight at the i-wireless Center with a 7:05 pm CST start time. Pro Hockey News’ Daniel Russell recorded all of the action at the Independence Event Center on Friday night and has submitted the following images from the contest.
