INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – David Simoes was the hero for the Missouri Mavericks Tuesday night at Independence Events Center, scoring the game-winning goal 1:22 mark into overtime in the team’s 2-1 victory over the Rapid City Rush.
Ed McGrane tied the game early in the third period and Charlie Effinger stopped 24 of 25 shots by the Rush on the evening.
The Mavericks couldn’t capitalize on two power play opportunities in the first period and entered the first intermission in a scoreless tie with Rapid City. The Mavericks outshot the Rush 13-9 in the period.
Rapid City got on the board with five minutes remaining in the second period on a 5-on-3 power play goal from Collin Circelli. The Mavericks failed to score in the period and headed into the final frame down by a goal. The Mavericks again dominated the shot total, outshooting the Rush 17-10 in the period and were outshooting them 29-19 in the game after the final intermission.
Ed McGrane knotted the score at 1-1 with a slap shot from the left point at the 4:11 mark of the third period. The goal was unassisted. Regulation ended in a tie and the game headed to overtime.
David Simoes became the hero at the 1:22 mark of the extra frame,
rocketing a slap shot from the point past Rapid City goaltender Tim Boron to capture the victory for Missouri. The goal was Simoes’ first as a Maverick. The Mavericks are on their way to South Dakota for two games this Thursday and Friday against the Rush at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center before returning home next weekend for games against the Arizona Sundogs on Friday and Wichita Thunder on Saturday.
