ALLEN, Texas – The Allen Americans defeated the Rio Grande Killer Bees 6-1 Sunday evening at the Allen Event Center in front of their biggest crowd of the season, 4,936.
The Americans opened the scoring in the first period when forward Brett Clouthier put one past Rio netminder Dan Dunn, assisted by Nick Layton and Joshua Hepditch at the 3:28 mark. The Americans added to their lead a little over eight minutes later when Clouthier fed Layton, who was stationed in front of the Rio net. Layton fired the puck past Dunn to make it 2-0 at the 11:46 mark. Colton Yellow Horn was credited with the secondary assist. Rio Grande Valley out shot the Americans 9-8 in the first 20 minutes but were unable to solve Allen netminder Marco Cousineau and the 2-0 score held going into the first break .The Killer Bees broke the shutout in the third period when David Marshall scored on a breakaway after he stole the puck at the Allen blue line to make the score 4-1 halfway through the frame. The Americans added two more tallies – Jarret Lukin ripped one past John Murray from the left face-off circle after a beautiful pass from Jason Deitsch and Jim McKenzie collected his second of the evening with a quick blast from along the right wing boards that snuck in past Murray to make it 6-1 Allen.
