PENSACOLA, FLA – Last weekend was a busy time for the Pensacola Ice Flyers. After a loss at home on Thursday Feb. 20 in OT to the Mississippi Surge, the Ice Flyers won back to back away games, defeating the Ice Gators in Lafayette on Friday and the Surge in Biloxi on Saturday. That win set the number one Pensacola team as the first to clinch a playoff berth. Many Pensacola fans expressed excitement at a Sunday Ice Bowling tournament.
News quickly spread that one of their fan favorites, Justin Alonzo, would be sent to Peoria along with the rights to Mike MacIntyre (another fan favorite). MacIntyre is currently called up to the CHL St. Charles Chill. In exchange, Peoria sent defenseman Tyler Amburgey and a cash consideration.
Right winger Alonzo leaves Ice Flyers with 36 games played and a 30 day IR. He has 6 goals, 16 assists, and a +5. In MacIntyre’s 18 games with the Ice Flyers as defenseman, he has put up 4 goals and 3 assists with a +8.
At 6″2″ and 215 lbs., Amburgey comes in with 5 goals, 16 assists, and 33 PIM.
There was a sense of frustration evident in the social media sites that Pensacola was losing someone so dear to the fans. One fan tweeted “Justin, you will be missed. I will be sure to cheer for you when you come back to play against us.” Another fan said “Thanks for being kind to me and my two boys. They are sad to see you go.”
Alonzo has been one of the most active players in community events and most interactive with the local booster club. There is even talk of an online petition to bring Justin back for the playoffs.
“I want to thank everyone in Pensacola for their love and support this season”, Alonzo commented. “I had an amazing time here and for sure am going to miss all of the guys.”
