WINNIPEG, MB – The Pittsburgh Penguins handed the Winnipeg Jets a 4-2 loss and dashed their slim hopes at catching the final playoff spot as they are officially eliminated from the Stanley Cup dance. The Penguins have now won four in a row vs Winnipeg and nineteen of the past twenty-two vs the Jets / Thrashers. With the victory the Penguins clinched the Metropolitan Division.
This was an exciting game yet there were not a lot of shots or many scoring chances but it was a fast paced physical affair that the Jets played and they did dominate the physical aspect as they landed numerous big hits but just couldn’t muster very much and had little good scoring chances.
The Penguins played a solid game and got some timely goals that the Jets would like to have back.
“We didn’t give up a lot, and I certainly liked that about our team,” Pens coach Dan Bylsma said.
Ondrej Pavelec wasn’t very busy as he only had 21 shots directed his way and allowed 4 goals stopping only 17 shots in the loss.
Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury had only 15 shots his way and made 13 saves getting the win to improve to 37-18-4 on the season.
Pittsburgh got goals from Beau Bennett his 3rd on the power play, Craig Adams his 5th , Paul Martin notched his 3rd on the power play , and Brian Gibbons got his 5th of the year.
“I wanted that pretty bad,” Martin said of his power play goal. “[Conditioning-wise, it] felt pretty good. As the game went on, I loosened up and started to feel a little better. Just to get back out there with the guys and play a game was a lot of fun.”
Winnipeg got goals from Olli Jokinen his 17th , Zach Redmond got his 1st of the season.
“The hole we put ourselves in at the beginning of the year, it’s tough to climb back,” Jokinen said. “But at the same time, we took huge steps ahead getting back in the [race] and making it exciting. We put ourselves in a position where we still had a chance, and that’s something that the guys can proud of.”
Sidney Crosby was the game’s first star and had two beauty helpers on the night and also showed why he is the world’s best player as he made numerous unreal plays with the puck and demonstrated his uncanny sense for finding players who are open .
After getting banged early in the game with a big hit, Jacob Trouba once again gave fans a glimpse of what’s to come as he led the team again in ice time with just under twenty four minutes and had three shots on goal .http://
The Jets will now hope to play spoilers as they finish out the remaining four games left on the season and will head out on the road for a game vs Toronto and hope to put a damper on the Leafs playoff hopes.
