NEW YORK – The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through November 1. A total of 135 regular-season games were scheduled for Oct. 11 through Nov. 1.
The cancellation was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL.
The action suggests that both sides are still too far apart to develop a quick schedule change if the CBA was close to completion.
It leaves the North American hockey fan seeking action in the minor leagues including the AHL, ECHL, CHL, and “A” level leagues. In addition, the Junior levels in Canada and the US should be seen as viable alternatives to the NHL. Canada has the obvious options of the QMJHL, CHL, OHL, and WHL. The US developed the NAHL and USHL as local options.
As always, Pro Hockey News is still the best place to get information on the minors in North America as well as our outstanding coverage of hockey in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.
