CHARLOTTE, NC – A 4-0 victory over the Chicago Wolves put Charlotte back on top of the Midwest Division. After a disappointing Saturday evening when the Checkers lost top spot to Chicago, Sunday afternoon saw them come back strongly.
Charlotte outshot Chicago 46-22, with goalie Mike Murphy making 22 to give him his fifth career shutout. Murphy has been out with an injury for the past four weeks, his excellent form before the injury had not deserted him.
The home side really took the game to Chicago, dominating the first period with 15 shots on goal to the visitors 6. The only problem was the game was still tied at the end of the period 0-0.
The Checkers went ahead in the second period much to the fans delight, it has been in front of the net that the team were misfiring. Zach Boychuk had a shot that hit Nicolas Blanchard’s arm, then it hit a post before flying in to the net.
Zac Dalpe added a second three minutes later to put Charlotte firmly in the driving seat. The downside to Charlotte’s afternoon was that Justin Soryal collided with one of the Wolves defenders and had to leave the ice. It was later announced that he will miss the rest of the season.
Bobby Sanguinetti scored number three for Charlotte in the third period, he had already assisted on the first two goals. Brett Sutter scored the fourth goal after Chicago pulled Eddie Lackie their goalie.
Fans voted Mike Murphy the Roll up Your Sleeves Hardest Worker of the Game. The next home game for Charlotte is on Friday March 16, face-off 7pm at the Time Warner Cable Arena, when they play Norfolk Admirals
