PAPILLION, NEBRASKA – The CCHA began the week on a down trodden note. Former Michigan State head coach Amo Bessone passed away on January 11, 2010 in New Mexico. The 1992 inductee into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame led the Michigan State Spartans to the 1966 NCAA Title. Known for his charity work through Lansing, Michigan and ice hockey everywhere, Bessone was a true champion. The native of West Springfield, Massachusetts was 93 years old.

Northern Michigan at Michigan Tech
The lowly Huskies picked up their first tie of the year as they would match Northern Michigan period by period. Bennett Royer scored first for Michigan Tech before Phil Fox knotted the game at one for the Wildcats a minute later. Kevin Genoe would see the most work of the goalies stopping 33 shots for Michigan Tech. Brian Stewart would make 32 saves for the Wildcats.
Miami at Ferris State
The RedHawks sent a message to the Bulldogs this weekend: “Go Away!” Ferris State was reluctant to accept the massage on Saturday fighting to a one goal loss. However, it was Friday’s -0 Miami victory that set the greater tone. After Ferris State swept Notre Dame last weekend and Robert Morris swept Miami, the two schools found themselves deadlocked in first place in the CCHA. Miami proudly reigns with a two game lead on the pesky Ferris State who will continue to resemble their mascot and fight on regardless of Miami’s wishes.
Nebraska-Omaha at Lake Superior State
As was the case all weekend throughout the CCHA, the Lakers and Mavericks played two very close games. Friday featured a Lake Superior State one point victory in regulation and Saturday featured a one point Lake Superior State victory in overtime. The Lakers used solid goaltending from Brian Mahoney-Wilson who continued to dominate despite receiving excessive work. Dean Blais’ Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks enjoy keeping opposing goalies busy consistently firing 30 plus shots on opposing goalies each night.
Notre Dame at Michigan State
Notre Dame bounced back after being swept last weekend to upset the Spartans with a 5-2 victory on Friday evening. The Irish have struggled this season after being the number one seed last year, Friday’s victory was their tenth this season. While the Irish would have to settle with a tie on Saturday after a late rally, Michigan State was happy to leave the series without being swept on home ice where the Spartans are 7-2-4. Michigan State did manage the extra point by winning the shoot out 1-0.
Alaska at Michigan
The long road trip from Fairbanks to Ann Arbor must have been tiresome for the Nanooks who would take a 6-0 loss on Friday night managing only four shots on net in the first period. Scott Greenham logged 20 minutes in net for Alaska as he would be pulled during the first intermission allowing three goals on 11 shots. After a disappointing showing on Friday, Alaska avoided the sweep on Saturday by holding the Wolverines in check through most of the evening. While the Nanooks would not collect the win, they did manage to skate to a tie with Michigan.
Bowling Green at Northern Michigan
The Wildcats pounded the Falcons on Friday evening for a 6-0 victory. By holding Bowling Green to three shots in the first period and 23 throughout the entirety of the game, Northern Michigan skated to an easy series opening victory at home. Despite the poor opening showing, the Falcons would hold onto a tie in the second game despite a late rally in the third period by the Wildcats.
