Madore, Checkers shut out San Antonio Race for post season comes down to next weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte blanked the San Antonio Rampage with a 3-0 win on Saturday evening. Goals from Beau Schmitz in the first period and Zach Boychuk and Brodie Sutter in the second sealed an excellent win for the Checkers.

In the 16th minute of the game, defenseman Schmitz put Charlotte ahead with his fourth goal of the season. Then in the 9th minute of the second period Zach Boychuk claimed goal number two with his 19th goal of the season.

Just one minute later Brodie Sutter added a third giving him a Gordie Howe hat trick over the weekend with an assist and a fight on Friday.Charlotte Checkers 2010 Primary

Rob Madore in the Charlotte goal had a spectacular night making 44 saves and keeping a clean sheet. His opposite number Brian Foster made 15 saves and allowed 3 goals. Madore, who has a 1.50 goals against average and a .960 save percentage is proving to be a first class goalie even though he is a rookie.

His 44 saves tonight is a club record, all these achievements from a player who was fourth string goalie at the start of the season.

This match was the eighth in the series with Charlotte coming out on top 5-3. The win keeps Charlotte involved in the play-off picture, although the Texas Stars kept the pressure on their rivals with another win tonight beating Grand Rapids 3-1.

The current situation in the Western Conference sees Texas Stars leading the way with 87 points from 66 games. Toronto Marlies have 84 points from 67 games and Charlotte have 83 points from 68 games.

Even though Charlotte still has a number of players out through injury they released Casey Pierro-Zabotel back to Gwinnett and CJ Severyn to Orlando. It is hoped that some of the players who traveled east to Raleigh will be back in Charlotte very soon.

Charlotte’s next game is against Milwaukee Admirals next Saturday and Sunday. These should be very hard fought games as the Admirals are chasing Charlotte to gain a play-off spot.
