Los Angeles takes opener against the Blues

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Los Angeles Kings took game one against the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center on Saturday afternoon with a final score of 3-1.
The Blue’s David Perron opened the scoring in the first period at 9:16. But it would ultimately be the only goal that could get past Jonathan Quick in the Kings net. A long slap shot towards the net from Alex Pietrangelo, was tipped in by Perron for the goal.
The rest of the game belonged to the Kings, thanks to Quick in the net, as Slava Voynov scored the tying goal at 16:58. A shot in front of the crease from Dustin Penner was wristed in by Voynov who was waiting at the corner to even the score at one apiece.
It would be late in the second period before the King’s Matt Greene would score the go-ahead goal. The shorthanded goal came as Dustin Brown intercepted the puck in the defensive zone and took it down the ice. His shot was knocked away, but as the puck stopped momentarily in the crease, Greene tipped it up and over the leg pad of Brian Elliott.
It turned out the Blues spent too much time in the penalty box in the third period and were unable to mount a comeback. The final blow came at 19:45, as Penner worked to get the puck out of zone, his shot slid the length of the ice into the net.
King’s Quick posted 28 saves for the game winner.
Elliott’s 26 saves weren’t enough for the game this time, as the second seed team was handed a loss for game one of the Western Semifinals from the eighth seed team. Game two will be Monday evening in St. Louis. Contact Shellie.Lima@prohockeynews.com
