Las Vegas ropes Eagles in three-game set

LAS VEGAS – After collecting wins on Wednesday and Friday night, the Las Vegas Wranglers beat the Colorado Eagles 6-2 tonight to sweep the team in a three-game road series.

Wranglers left wing Robbie Smith tallied the lone goal of the first period, giving Las Vegas a 1-0 lead after nine shots on goal from each team. The team was quick to take a 4-0 lead in the second frame, though, with three goals scored in less than five minutes. Wranglers left wing Josh Lunden netted a goal at 2:08, and center Eric Lampe secured a goal 93 seconds later. Wranglers center Pete MacArthur recorded a goal three minutes later for a 4-0 advantage, but Eagles forward Steve Haddon responded with one of his own to put Colorado on the board. With the score holding at 4-1, Lunden notched his second goal of the night on a power play to regain the four-goal lead over Colorado.

Midway through the final period, Haddon secured a second goal for the Eagles to make it a 5-2 game. Colorado outshot Las Vegas 18 to four in the third, but left wing Adam Miller netted a goal in the final minutes to give Las Vegas the 6-2 win and the three-game sweep of the series. With an assist on Miller’s goal, Lampe overtook Eagles forward Chad Costello (currently with the American Hockey League) as the ECHL’s leading scorer with 58 points. Goaltender Joe Fallon stopped 28 of 30 shots for Las Vegas tonight, earning his league-leading 23rd win as well.

The Wranglers return home to Orleans Arena with three road wins in a row on Thursday, Feb. 2, to take on defending Kelly Cup champions, the Alaska Aces.
