WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The Winnipeg Jets climbed to within a game of first place in the Southeast Division with a gritty 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday night.
The Jets got this victory for rookie d-man Zac Redmond who had a freak injury earlier in the day after the morning skate when he fell and was cut for a nasty gash by a teammate who stepped on the back of his leg. He required emergency surgery and may be out for the rest of the season.
The Jets were hoping to jump on the injury plagued Hurricanes early and they did just that as Blake Wheeler got them going as he ripped one past Cam Ward to give them the lead.
With less than two minutes to go, the Canes tied things up as Alex Semin made a great pass to Jiri Tlusty who made no mistake and fired it past Pavelec to knot things up.
After one period of play, the score was 1-1 with shots favoring the Hurricanes 10-8.
The Jets found themselves in penalty trouble in the 2nd as Wheeler was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for some choice words directed at the referee. Grant Clitsome was then called for interference and the Jets were down by two man .Pavelec made some great stops and Mark Stuart threw his body in front of some big blasts the score remained tied.
After 40 minutes score was 1-1, shots were 18-14 for Carolina.
In the final frame, Evander Kane gave the Jets the lead as he snapped one past Ward from a bad angle.
The Hurricanes tied things up after a Jay Harrison point shot found Jordan Staal in front and he banged it past Pavelec.
Goals kept coming as Jets captain and former Hurricane Andrew Ladd who was also playing his 500th NHL game took a nice feed from Bryan Little and beat his buddy Cam Ward to give Winnipeg the lead .
Under a minute later the Hurricanes tied things up after some sloppy play by the Jets, Tlusty got his second of the game.
The Jets took the lead for good as Wheeler got his second of the game which proved to be the winner.
Winnipeg has now won three games in a row on the road and will look to continue with a game in Philly on Saturday afternoon against the Flyers.
