DENVER, CO – It was a great effort by the Winnipeg Jets and the end result wasn’t what they wanted as they came up on the short side of a 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche. They gained a valuable point to close within four of the final playoff spot but time is not on there side as they are chasing down teams that have games in hand.
Back up Al Montoya did a great job in the pipes as he always does as he made 31 saves in the loss.
Semyon Varlamov was on his game as well as he made 33 saves enroute to his 32nd victory of the season.
Once again the Jets found themselves in penalty trouble as they were shorthanded four times in the first period and ended up giving the Avalanche six power plays overall. The penalty killing was once again bang on as they killed off every penalty and only gave up 7 shots in all the power plays they now are the top road killers in the league.
Jim Slater who was moved up to center Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler had a great game and was awarded a penalty shot in the first period in which he was stymied by Varlamov .
It was tough early on for the Jets to get any flow going on the bench as some guys don’t kill penalties but once they got rolling this was a very entertaining game between these two teams.
Winnipeg got both their goals from Big Dustin Byfuglien who showed why he is such a special player as he notched his 15th and 16th of the season and was throwing his weight around all game long.
Bryan Little had a strong outing as well for the Jets as he finished with two helpers to give him 52 points on the season and he is now the team scoring leader.
Colorado got goals from John Mitchell his 7th , Andre Benoit his 5th and Matt Duchene got the winner his 21st .
The Jets will look back on the Benoit goal ashe scored with twelve seconds remaining in the second period off a lost face off in which Devin Setoguchi looked to be held up getting out to the point with no call.
The Jets lost John Albert who was playing his first game since being recalled from St. Johns to an upper body injury in the second period.
They will now head home and need to regroup and get a good win streak going to stay in the race for eighth.
