IIHF names 2011 U20 WJC tournament all-star team

BUFFALO, NY- The International Ice Hockey Federation announced the World U20 Championship Tournament All-Star team yesterday at the conclusion of the gold medal game won by Russia over Canada 5-3.
 
The Washington Capitals organization already loaded with two Russian stars in Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin must have been salivating after the performance of two of their draft picks from Russia who both made the WJC All-Star Team.    
 
The All-Star Team was selected by the media in attendance in Buffalo.   Chosen were Defenseman Dmitri Orlov and forward Yevgeni Kuznetsov of Russia along with one American Jack Campbell in goal and three Canadians defenseman Ryan Ellis and forwards, Brayden Schenn and Ryan Johansen.
 
In addition to the All-Star Team, individual awards were also announced. Campbell picked up the best goal tender award, Ellis was voted best defenseman and Schenn won both the Tournament MVP and best forward awards.   Bios on each All-Star follow:
 
(F) Brayden Schenn, age 19, Height 06.00-Weight 198: Schenn led all tournament scorers with 18 points (8-g, 10-a). His WJC output tied the all-time scoring record for Team Canada in this competition. He was a first round draft choice of the Los Angeles Kings and went number five overall in the 2009 NHL entry draft.   He played junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Brandon Wheat Kings. He has primarily split his time this season between the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League and the NHL Kings.
 
(F) Yevgeni Kuznetsov, age 18, and Height 6.01-Weight 176:   He finished second in tournament scoring while leading his team to the gold medal. He produced 11 points (4-g, 7-a) including three assists in the championship matchup with Canada. He was a round one draft choice of the Washington Capitals, number 26 overall in the 2010 NHL entry draft. He is in his second season in the Kontinental Hockey League with Chelyabinsk Traktor.       
 
(F) Ryan Johansen, age 18, Height 6.02-Weight 180:   The Vancouver, BC native was a first round draft choice of the Columbus Blue Jackets and number four overall in the 2010 NHL entry draft.   He is currently playing junior hockey with the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. Normally a center he scored nine points (3-g, 6-a) at the WJC games.
 
(D) Ryan Ellis, age 20, Height 5.09-Weight 173: Ellis has excelled on defense every place he has played despite being considered small for the position. This was his third year with Team Canada. He turned 20 on January 3rd.   He plays with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League He was the 11th overall draft choice by the Nashville Predators in the 2009 NHL entry draft. Ellis had 3 goals and seven assists in the WJC this year.
 
(D) Dmitri Orlov, age 19, Height 6.00-Weight 197: Orlov is in his second season in the Kontinental Hockey League. Another Washington Capital prospect he scored one goal and added eight assists in tournament play. He was a 2009 draft choice selected as the 55th player in that draft.   This was his second IIHF U20 tournament.

(G) Jack Campbell, age 18, Height 6.02-Weight 175: The Port Huron, Michigan native is a product of the USA Hockey’s National Player Development Program. He played in both the North American Hockey League and the United States Hockey League with the U-18 and U-20 NDP teams. He is currently a member of the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. He was the first goal tender taken in the 2010 NHL draft. He was selected 11th overall by the Dallas Stars. He led the WJC with a 1.70 goals against average and a save percentage of .0941.   He is eligible to return to the WJC next year after having won gold in 2010 and bronze in 2011.
