Austin Smith’s sixth goal of the 2013 ECHL Kelly Cup playoffs at 7:30 of the first period was the only goal needed to get the win against Ontario on Friday night but the scoring did not end there. At 10:51 Patrick Cullity tallied his second goal in as many games when his dump in ricocheted of a stanchion and deflected into Berube’s net as the Ontario goal tender came out to play the puck. Not to be outdone by Smith, Tyler Gron, also netted his sixth playoff goal at 16:31 to close out the first period scoring.
Leading 3 to 0 to start the middle frame Idaho added two more to their goal total in the second period. At 10:25 Gron squeezed the puck between the left post and the arm of J.F. Berube for his second goal of the game and seventh of the playoffs. Also getting on the board was Justin Taylor with a late goal at 19:03 to take a five to nothing lead into the third period.
Looking for a spark Chris Carozzi replaced Berube between the pipes for Ontario to start the third period. Although the Reign battled hard, peppering Robinson with 12 shots, the only scoring in the final frame was goal number six for the Steelheads from Austin Fyten at 7:02.
Named first star of the game for the Idaho Steelheads after his shut out performance goalie Josh Robinson had this to say in the on-ice interview;
“Yeah it was good to get the win and it was definitely a total team effort,” said Robinson, “It was definitely the result we were looking for,”
Game five will be tomorrow night, April 27, at the Century Link Arena in Boise, Idaho. Game time is 7:10 P.M. .
