Hutchinson back stops Jets to win over Bruins

WPG Jets logoWINNIPEG, MB – It was the final home game of the season for the Winnipeg Jets and once again there would be no playoffs at the MTS Centre but in tonight’s last hockey game the Jets beat the top ranked Bruins 2-1 in a hard fought game that ended in a shoot out.

Rookie goalie Michael Hutchinson was once again spectacular in the pipes for Winnipeg as he made 32 saves plus 3 more in the shoot out to get his first career NHL win , and was named the game’s first star.

“The players played as hard as they could to give [Hutchinson] a chance to be great and win, and that’s what happened,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said. “He was great — we win.”

Bruins Chad Johnson was no slouch in net either as he made 36 saves during the game in the loss , he was named the games second star.

Boston was playing short benched but no one was looking to that as an aexcuse for the loss.

“It shouldn’t be an excuse for our team,” Bruins forward Gregory Campbell said of the lineup. “We’re a good team, and we’re built to compete every night. Whether we have those two guys in the lineup or not, things are going to happen throughout the course of the season and if we lost them in the playoffs … It’s something that we have to learn to deal with.”

The Jets were coming off a grueling practice yesterday as coach Paul Maurice put them through a good old fashioned bag skate and showed them that if he is back at the helm next season conditioning will be a main focus. So this game was almost like a back to back game and the team showed no ill effects and they put forth a great all round team effort and were rewarded with a big win .

“Boston is one of the top teams in the League, and being able to play well against them goes a long for your confidence, knowing that you can play in this League,” Hutchinson said. “When you make saves on a guy like [Iginla], that is just an added bonus.”

Evander Kane broke an 8 game goalless drought as he scored with just over two minutes left his 18th of the season finishing off a great play by Blake Wheeler.

Boston got its lone goal off the stick of Brad Marchand his 24th.

“Getting your first game is definitely something special, but your first win kind of trumps that a little bit,” Hutchinson said. “With it being against Boston, the team that kind of gave up on me, it just makes it even more sweet.”

Bryan Little was the only player to find the back of the net in the shoot out as this was a great display all round by the goalies.http://

The Jets will close out their regular season tomorrow night against the Calgary Flames.

Earlier in the day it was announced forward Devin Setoguchi has left the team on a leave to deal with a private matter .
