Hurricanes add young talent but need to develop them quickly

CHARLOTTE, NC – By now you know about the trade of Jordan Staal from Pittsburgh to the Hurricanes, but that was just the beginning of Carolina’s dealings. On Saturday, with nine picks in the final six rounds, the Hurricanes selected two goaltenders. Daniel Altshuller, from Nepean, Ontario, a 6’ 3’’, 191-pound 17-year-old who has played one season for the Oshawa Generals.

The second goalie is Collin Olsen, 6’ 4”; 197 pound is on the USA National Team Development program. In April this year he won gold in the 2012 Under-18 World Championship.

In the second round of the draft, Carolina picked Phillip Di Giuseppe, a 6’ forward from the University of Michigan. This young man has terrific speed and a decent shot. Also taken in the third round was forward Brock McGinn, whose older brother Jamie plays for the Colorado Avalanche. McGinn is five foot eleven, weighing 174 lbs.

Two defensemen and a forward were taken in the fourth round by Carolina. Erik Karlsson a 6’ 161 pound forward played in the Swedish junior league last season. Trevor Carrick and Jaccob Slavin, two defensemen were the next picks. Carrick, an Ontario native, played for the Markham Majors while Slavin is off to Colorado College after 60 games for the Chicago Steel.

Another forward was selected in the fifth round, Brendan Woods, son of former Hershey Head Coach Bob Woods. Brendan spent two years at Chicago Steel and now he attends the University of Wisconsin.

Carolina’s final selection was in the seventh round, Brendan Collier is a forward from Malden (Mass) Catholic High who will be attending Boston University next season.

The Hurricanes have compiled an impressive list of young prospects for the future. The big question is whether the Canes would have been better served by taking that number eight pick. Forward Filip Forsberg was available; he went at number 11 to Washington Capitals.

The discussions will carry on and many Hurricane fans may still feel the trading of Brandon Sutter and the further loss of an excellent young talent in Brian Dumoulin will be a loss to the team.

Time alone will tell the story.
