WASHINGTON, DC – The Washington Capitals entered game six needing a win. They got their win in dominant fashion with a solid victory over the New York Rangers sending the series back to Madison Square Garden and game seven on Saturday afternoon.
Alex Overchikin got things going in the first period when he one-timed a shot past Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist who was sliding left to right. But the Caps captain found the vacated left side of the net for the goal.
The Caps then built a 2-0 lead in the second period on a goal from Jason Chimera off a rebound of a shot from the near boards that Lundqvist stopped but Chimera was was in the right place at the right time for the tap in that cleanly beat the Ranger goalie.
The Caps then put their defensive scheme to work that completely bottled up the Rangers in every zone.
The 2-1 final score was not nearly as close as the actual play. The Rangers lone goal was scored by Marian Gaborik in a so-what last minute marker.
The two teams no head to New York for game seven and the right to face the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Finals.
