READING, PA – In their biennial rankings of minor league sports markets, the Hershey-Harrisburg market was the winner in Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal. It beat out San Bernardino, California, Providence-Pawtucket, R.I., Reading, Pa, and Portland, Maine for the top honor. Hershey-Harrisburg is home to the AHL’s Hershey Bears and the Harrisburg Senators AA baseball team. Rounding out the Top 10 markets is Syracuse, N.Y., Charleston, S.C., Modesto, California, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Spokane, Washington. Of the Top 10 markets, the ECHL is well-represented as San Bernardino is home to the Ontario Reign and Reading is home to the Royals and Charleston home to the South Carolina Stingrays. Not to be outdone is the AHL with Hershey being home to the Bears, Providence is home to the Providence Bruins, Portland houses the Portland Pirates, and Syracuse the home of the Syracuse Crunch. This is the second time Hershey-Harrisburg won the honor. As far as Pennsylvania’s other Top 10 market, Reading, it is the highest ranking ever for the city which also houses the Reading Express Indoor Football team as well as the Royals in the Sovereign Center which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
