ABBOTSFORD, BC – The Stars were defeated by Abbotsford 2-1 in front of 3,271 fans at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Friday night. Abbotsford goalie Danny Taylor (12-5-0) stopped 32 Stars shots, including 21 in the final two periods to preserve the win. Left wing Lance Bouma gave the Heat a 2-1 lead at 5:32 of the third period, scoring the eventual game-winning goal. Texas goalie Jimmy Spratt (1-1-0) stopped 26 shots in the loss. Forward Stephen Schultz scored the Stars’ lone goal in the defeat, as Texas dropped to 8-9-0-0 on the road this season.
The Stars opened the scoring at 3:35 of the first period with a power-play goal by Stephen Shultz. Center Travis Morin and defenseman Jordie Benn helped set up the goal. Schultz potted a rebound off a point shot by Benn, slipping his third goal of the year past Danny Taylor for the 1-0 lead. The Heat answered back just 28-seconds later with a goal by Jon Rheault. Forward Krys Kolanos sprung Rheault on a breakaway. The Heat forward was initially stopped by Texas goalie Jimmy Spratt, but the rebound rolled in over the goal-line prior to the whistle, tying the game 1-1.
After a scoreless second period, Lance Bouma scored his third goal of the year at 5:32 of the third period, giving the Heat a 2-1 lead. Bouma put in a rebound off his own shot, giving Abbotsford the win.
Texas concludes a three-game road trip in San Antonio on January 6. Texas returns home on Saturday, January 7 to host Rockford at 7:00 p.m.
