CLEVELAND, OHIO – Hamilton Bulldogs forward Nick Tarnasky notched two third period goals to get his club to overtime, but Lake Erie Monsters forwards Mike Sgarbossa, Bryan Lerg and Joey Hishon scored in the shootout to lift Lake Erie (3-3-0-0) past Hamilton (1-0-0-2) 3-2 on Friday night at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Malone was credited with the first goal of the night at 18:15 of the first period when he fired the puck to the front of the Bulldogs net from the corner and it bounced in off Hamilton defenceman Magnus Nygren. Assists were credited to defenceman Karl Stollery and Hishon.
Malone struck again at 7:02 of the second period, this time short handed, when he ripped a wrist shot past Bulldogs goaltender Dustin Tokarski, unassisted.
The Bulldogs managed just nine shots on goal through the first two periods, but stormed back in the third, outshooting the Monsters 14-4 in the final frame.
Tarnasky drew Hamilton to within one at 4:51 of the third, with assists to forwards Gabriel Dumont and Joonas Nattinen. Less than four minutes later, Tarnasky tipped home a Magnus Nygren point shot to tie the game 2-2, with assists going to Nygren and Dumont.
After a scoreless overtime in which the Bulldogs outshot the Monsters 2-0, Lake Erie notched three shootout goals on four attempts to seal the win.
Tokarski made 24 saves on 26 shots in defeat, while Lake Erie goaltender Sami Aittokallio made 23 saves on 25 shots in the victory.
Hamilton went 1-for-6 on the power play, while Lake Erie went 1-for-4.
Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Sunday, October 20th, when they travel to Toronto to take on the Toronto Marlies
