SHEFFIELD, UK – Genting Casino Coventry Blaze’s hopes of reaching the Rapid Solicitors Elite League play-off final four weekend came to an end following a 6-1 defeat to Sheffield Steelers at Sheffield Arena.
Dustin Kohn grabbed the all-important first goal at 8.24 to put Steelers ahead before Blaze coach Marc LeFebvre called a time-out at 30.24.
However, 27 seconds later Steelers doubled their advantage through Robert Dowd and he added a third on the powerplay at 34.25.
Maxime Lacroix swiftly made it 4-0 at 35.16 but teenage British forward Ross Venus got Blaze on the board 1.52 into the final period.
Further goals from Kohn (54.09 powerplay) and Danny Meyers (57.13) ensured a disappointing end for Blaze.
LeFebvre said: “It certainly was not the way we wanted to go out but fair play to Sheffield they are a good hockey club and were the best team tonight.
“I called a time-out because I just wanted to slow things down. We could not get the puck out of our own zone but it didn’t really work out that well.
“It is disappointing but I will learn from this and I hope the players learn from this if they are in this situation again. It was just not meant to be.”
