Series Reviews:
Bowling Green at Ohio State
The Buckeyes opened the series in dominating fashion on Friday evening. In a snow ball effect, Ohio State slowly added one goal after another on the Falcons scoring once in the first period, twice in the second, and four times in the third. John Albert led Ohio State’s stat sheet with four assists and C.J. Severyn recorded three points for the ninth place Buckeyes. Cal Heeter became starved for action in the third period as Bowling Green would manage only three shots on goal against the Buckeye netminder.
The Buckeyes may have earned the sweep by edging the Falcons on Saturday night, but it would come with some sort of a challenge. After a route on Friday, Bowling Green bounced back to pressure the Buckeyes late into the third period. However it was Cal Heeter’s 21 saves for his eighth win this season that would send the Falcons to their seventh loss in their last eight games.
Alaska at Nebraska-Omaha
Leading freshman scorer Andy Taranto scored once in the first period to get the ball rolling for the Nanooks. Nebraska-Omaha’s Alex Hudson would score in the second period to tie the game till the third period. The Nanooks would score twice in the third period to capture the victory on the shoulders of Scott Greenham who would stop 41 shots on goal for his tenth win this season.
Alex Hudson scored twice for the Mavericks to avoid the home ice sweep by the fourth place Nanooks. Hudson’s goals were his fifth and sixth of the season. John Faulkner held Nebraska-Omaha in the game by making 21 of 22 saves. The win is the eight of the season for Faulkner. Meanwhile, Alaska goalie Scott Greenham lost for just the sixth time this season while making 34 of 36 saves.
Lake Superior State at Michigan State
The Spartans used special teams to their advantage Friday evening scoring twice on three chances on the power play and not allowing the Lakers to net a single goal while on the penalty kill. Andrew Rowe scored twice for Michigan State who also received goals from Nick Sucharski and Derek Grant. Drew Palmisano made 31 saves in his winning effort for the second place Spartans. Michigan State is currently ranked ninth in the National Polls.
A hard fought third period led to a tie game in East Lansing as both the Lakers and Spartans would score twice in the third period. A late game tying goal at 17:02 in the third by Michigan State’s Torey Krug would give him his second goal of the season and the Spartans the tie. Lake Superior State’s Brian Mahoney-Wilson made 30 saves to earn his fourth tie of the season while Michigan State’s Drew Palmisano made 32 saves to earn his third tie this season.
Michigan at Western Michigan
Steve Kampfer, Lindsay Sparks, and Brandon Burlon scored one goal and two assists apiece to lead the Wolverines over the last place Broncos. Western Michigan goalie Riley Gill found work all evening as he would face a total of 47 shots on goal from the overly aggressive Wolverines. The Win is the sixth this season for the sub-.500 Michigan Wolverines.
The Wolverines earned the series sweep by defeating the struggling Broncos early. Western Michigan lost their twelfth game this season as Michigan would rise to win their twelfth. The Wolverines were led by junior goaltender and Highland, Michigan native Bryan Hogan who stopped 25 shots on net won his twelfth game this season. The win improves the Michigan Wolverines to 12-10-0.
Ferris State at Notre Dame
The Bulldogs opened their series against the Irish on a high note winning by a solid margin. Mike Embach would lead Ferris State with three points while Pat Nagle would make 18 saves for his sixth win for the Bulldogs. Ferris State also received two point contributions from Justin Menke, Zach Redmond, Scott Wietecha, and Aaron Lewicki.
The Irish jumped out to an early lead scoring twice in the first period. However, it was Ferris State’s consistent play over the game that allowed them to capture the win and sweep. Cody Chupp led the Bulldogs with two goals and Pat Nagle made 27 saves for his seventh win this season.
Miami verse Robert Morris (home and home)
The Colonials upset the top ranked RedHawks Friday evening scoring a little over a minute apart shortly into the third period. Robert Morris won with goals by J.C. Velasquez, Stefan Salituro, and Chris Kushneriuk. Brooks Ostergard made 39 saves in goal as RMU earned just its fourth win in 19 games this season.
The lowly Colonials swept the number one seeded RedHawks by way of the power play. Robert Morris scored twice on the power play while giving up one lone goal on the penalty kill to Miami. Brooks Ostergard worked hard all afternoon stopping 38 shots for his fourth win this season. The win is Ostergard’s second over the RedHawks, and has now stopped 77 shots on goal in one weekend from one team for the sweep and a pair of wins.
