Falcons lose to Devils in OT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass – The Springfield Falcons lost at home in overtime to the Lowell Devils in a scrappy 2 to 3 Halloween afternoon match. Last year’s Springfield Falcons captain Tim Sestito scored the game winner at 2:43 in OT for the Devils. Teammates Matt Taormina scored a power play goal at 11:30 into the first period, and Nick Palmieri goaled at 13:45 in the second to complete the tally. The Falcons scored first when Charles Linglet tapped in a swoop around feed from behind the net from Colton Fetter. Ryan Potulny scored his third goal of the season at 7:07 in the third with assists from Cody Wild and Charles Linglet.

Both teams combined for 54 penalty minutes, 27 each. Six fighting majors were assessed for thirty of those minutes. Two fights involved Lowell’s left winger Louis Robitaille who started the game leading the Devil’s stat sheet with 49 penalty minutes. He added two for roughing and a double minor for spearing at the end of the OT period. The Falcons were short handed much of the first as they killed off three of the four powers plays in that period. Lowell scored on one of six power plays, Springfield was 0 for five.

The Falcons specialty team entered the game ranked third in the AHL for Team Power Plays at 24% lead by Chris Minard with five of their 12 power play goals. Chris was also the leading Springfield, as well as, the AHL goal scorer going into Saturday’s game. The Falcons defeated the River Rats in Albany Friday night with help from Minard’s two goals and a shoot out goal in OT. Minard did not play in Saturday’s match up due to precautionary health concerns.

“So what” Coach Rob Daum declared, indicating Minard’s absence was no excuse for the loss; “you have to be able to overcome”. The Falcons specialty team couldn’t get anything going as they were scoreless in five power plays “we miss Minard obviously on the power play – he’s a big part of it”. The Coach felt the turning point was the double minor in the first, though early in the game. The Falcons had just scored to take the lead then faced with a double minor power play to kill. “We put ourselves behind the eight ball.” The Devils scored 26 seconds into that penalty kill. “We were very fortunate to get a point based on the way the game was played”

The Falcons were out shot 41 to 23; 18 to 6 in the first period alone. Falcons Goalie Devon Dubnyk was credited with 38 saves. Coach Daum felt that Devon played well and provides the team with confidence, but “we have to be smarter and not make him face a thousand shots a night.”

The Falcons have tallied three of a possible four points so far this weekend, and are headed to Worcester to face the Sharks Sunday.
