Excel Hull Stingrays suffer disappointing weekend

HULL, UK – Jason Silverthorn admitted breaking his seven-game goal drought meant nothing as Excel Hull Stingrays suffered a 7-4 defeat at Edinburgh Capitals in the Elite League on Sunday night.
The Canadian forward bagged a brace to score for the first time since returning from a broken jaw but Stingrays’ reverse left them six points adrift at the bottom. The other scorers for Hull were Lee Mitchell and James Sanford while a brace from Jeff Hutchins, Owen Fussey, Mark Garside and a solitary goal for Simon Lambert were more than enough for the Scottish side to pick up a comfortable win. It was even more impressive for the Capitals to bounce back from heavy defeats on the road in Belfast on Friday night, followed by another game away in Cardiff on Saturday night. On Saturday night the Stingrays went down 5-1 at home to local rivals and Continental Cup finalists Sheffield Steelers in what some have described as an “inept and woeful” performance. Hero from Bolzano Matt Hubbauer notched a brace while Brad Cruikshank scored a hat-trick to defeat the Stingrays. Curtis Huppe scored the only goal in response for the Stingrays. The game also a night of scoring markers as Cruikshank’s second was his 200th EIHL career point while Jason Hewitt notched his 100th point in EIHL competition when he assisted on the Steelers first goal from Hubbauer.

Silverthorn said: “You are never happy when you lose. You want to score goals to win games. It’s not a good feeling when you score but don’t contribute to a win. It has been frustrating because I was brought here to score goals and to help the team win.
“We knew it was a big weekend for us so to get no points is disappointing. We were in both games but we found a way to lose. When you are down a couple of goals early in a game it’s always going to be an uphill battle, you never want to play like that. We have to make better starts. It’s tough right now. Everyone is working hard but we will get back on the ice this week and get ready for Nottingham. I just hope things turn for us.”
