MOSCOW, RUSSIA – Reports coming out of Russia suggest one of the countries most historic clubs may be on its last legs. Dynamo Moscow, former home of NHL superstar Alexander Ovechkin, has seen its financial state slide further over recent months and it now seems as though the team may merge with fellow Moscow side HC MVD. While MVD are on a high in the KHL Gagarin Cup final, coming back from two games down to level the best of seven series 2-2 against defending champions AK Bars, Dynamo have reportedly released last Summers big signing – Jiri Hudler. The Czech forward infamously left Detroit Red Wings to join Dynamo, despite being awarded a $5.75m, two year contract during NHL contract arbitration, but was unable to help the side beyond round 1 of the KHL play-offs this year. Dynamo, who Ovechkin likened to the Montreal Canadiens of Russian hockey, were formed in 1946 and clinched four Soviet League titles, four Russian league titles and the 2006 European Champions Cup during its run as one of the countries top sides. More details are expected to emerge over the coming weeks as to whether Dynamo can retain their status, or if the club will indeed merge with MVD. Contact the author: rob.mcgregor@prohockeynews.com
