GLENDALE, Ariz – Youth was not served on Friday evening in Arizona. The more mature and seasoned Red Wings were patient and deadly when given the opportunities. The chances were few but all three were cashed in by the Red Wings in a 4-1 win that really was not that close.
Jimmy Howard was stellar in net again for Detroit. This despite calls for his head on a platter earlier in the series.
With the game tied at one apiece, Howard stoned Martin Hanzal in the third on the initial shot and the rebound attempt.
Detroit used that save sequence to dominate the Coyotes the rest of the way and scored three times in the third including Henrik Zetterberg’s empty-netter.
Drew Miller, Tomas Holdstrom and Pavel Datsyuk also scored for Detroit.
Ed Jovanovski scored for Phoenix.
Ilya Bryzgalov made 25 saves on the night but was left defenseless on several of the Detroit scores. His defense has abandoned him in each of the Phoenix losses. The curse of youth perhaps.
Howard made 30 saves on the night and was the spark the Red Wings needed heading home for game six on Sunday.
