Cyclones raise North Division banner

CINCINNATI , Oh – The reigning North Division Champions opened the new season with three road games before coming home to an appreciative crowd of 5,086. The previous contests netted two wins and one loss. Prior to the game, the fans cheered the hanging of the 2009 North Division Championship banner.

Spirited play has been the order of the day, so far for Coach Chuck Weber’s youthful squad. Barrett Ehgoetz returns to captain this year’s edition. Other returnees include Scott Reynolds, Brian O’Hanley, Jimmy Kilpatrick, Dustin Sproat, and Jamie Coughlan.

Rookie net-minder Jeremy Smith has three wins in three starts, to propel the “Clones” to second place in the North, behind the K-Wings. The rivalry with the Kalamazoo Wings dates to the old IHL days when Ken Hitchcock was their coach.

October will see the Cyclones play six of seven on the road to the chagrin of the home fans, who also follow the team on the road. A large group recently caravanned to Johnstown and Wheeling to witness the wins.

Other notable rookies include Mark Voakes, who netted a hat trick against Wheeling on the road. Chris Mueller has had a solid campaign thus far, scoring four goals and an assist. Veteran players Reid Cashman, Brock Sheahan, and Kevin Roeder have contributed to winning efforts as well.

Coach Weber has added tough guy Hans Benson to keep things under control on the ice. Weber has said that “They’ve [rookies] been responding well. They’re growing up quickly; that’s life in pro hockey.”

Weber said of tonight’s game with Jeremy Smith in the net, “He’s been solid for us. This is the game he’s had to bail us out. The first two games, he was solid and didn’t get himself into too much trouble. I think he wants that first one [goal] back tonight. He kind of let a rebound get loose, that he didn’t need to,” then added “when push came to shove, in the third period he did a great job of giving us a chance to win.”
