Cyclones can’t catch Stingrays in 4-3 loss

CINCINNATI , Ohio- The reigning Kelly Cup champion Cyclones are facing elimination after Wednesday night’s loss to the Stingrays. The visitors jumped out to a four goal lead and the Cyclones failed to catch up.The win gives South Carolina a three games to none advantage in the best-of-seven series.

The Stingrays scored in the first on a power play tally by Maxime Lacroix at 7:53 from Travis Morin and Brad Farynuk. The next three South Carolina goals were scored by Trent Campbell, Nikita Kashirsky, and Zach Tarkir. Those goals proved to be the barrier too high for Cincinnati as they have never overcome a four goal lead in a game. Cincinnaiti did make a game of it as the Cyclones scored their first goal of the game on a turnover behind the Stingrays net. Mark Santorelli fed the biscuit to Barrett Ehgoetz who pushed the puck past the goal line at 16:38. The home team rallied for the second unanswered goal on a power play one minute and a half later. Dustin Sproat and Jimmy Kilpatrick passed to Kyle Rank who scored on a backhander. There was no further scoring in the period. Cincinnati starting goaltender Loic Lacasse was pulled after the fourth South Carolina score in favor of Ryan Nie, who shut the door on any further Stingrays tallies. The third period opened with promise as Ehgoetz scored his second of the night just 1:52 into the final stanza on a power play. Assists were given Matt MacDonald and Sproat. The defending

champs fought valiantly but South Carolina tightened its defense and no further scoring occurred. Stingrays goalie Jonathan Boutin was stellar in net in the third to stave off any chance of overtime. Game 4 is Friday night at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati.
