SYRACUSE, NY – Evan Rankin’s third-period goal pushed the Crunch past the Albany Devils for a 2-1 victory tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Syracuse Crunch goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis stopped 16 of 17 shots on goal for his 17th win of the season. Albany Devils netminder Scott Wedgewood stopped 23 of 25 shots faced. The Crunch were unable to convert on their two power-play opportunities, while the penalty kill unit shut down two of three Albany man advantages.
The win brings the season record against the Devils to 2-2-0-1 and boosts the team’s overall record to 28-30-4-7.
After a scoreless first period, the Devils took the lead 11:30 into the second frame with a power-play goal from Harri Pesonen. Pesonen’s wide shot bounced off the boards allowing him to pick up the rebound and skate across the crease for a shot from the left side. Alexander Urbom and Wedgewood picked up assists. The Crunch brought the score to 1-1 with 2:02 remaining in the second period. Cedric Paquette picked up the rebound from Adam Erne’s initial shot from the right circle to put the puck past Wedgewood. Yanni Gourde tallied a point for the second assist.
Rankin scored the game-winning goal at the 8:21 mark of the final period. Rankin picked up the rebound off an Artem Sergeev’s shot from the blue line to give the Crunch a 2-1 victory.
The Crunch host the Utica Comets tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the War Memorial Arena.
