Clan get council approval

BRAEHEAD, UK – A top-flight professional ice hockey team playing out of Braehead Arena will further enhance Renfrewshire’s reputation as a place for sporting excellence. That’s the view of Renfrewshire Council leader, Derek Mackay after it was announced that the new Braehead Clan team would play in the UK’s Elite League, next season. Councillor Mackay said: “I am delighted that the newest top-class ice hockey team in the UK will have their home rink in Renfrewshire. And that’s as it should be, as we have a fantastic tradition of ice sports in this area. “As well as putting Renfrewshire on the ice hockey map nationally, there will also be an economic spin-off, as many fans from visiting teams will be coming to Braehead Arena to watch their team. “Many of these fans from England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be coming to Scotland see their teams play double-headers over a weekend – also playing the Edinburgh Capitals. “We have got to make sure we provide a big enough attraction that they will base themselves here in Renfrewshire when they come to Scotland for their weekend of ice hockey.” Councillor Mackay added: “The deal with Braehead Arena to be the home rink for the new ice hockey team means that ice time will be also available for other ice sports enthusiasts in Renfrewshire. “And that is great news for the Paisley Pirates ice hockey team who will continue to play out of Braehead next season, junior teams, recreational skaters along with ice dance and figure skaters.”
