CHL PLAYOFFS – Windsor, Calgary, Brandon, Vancouver, and Kelowna sweep into the second round

READING, PA –  Very rarely do you ever see four teams sweep their opponents in the same league in the same round, but that’s exactly what four of the above mentioned teams did in the first round of the WHL playoffs. Windsor is part of the OHL.
 
In the WHL, the Calgary Hitmen make quick work of the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Brandon Wheat Kings did the same to the Kooteney Ice, the Vancouver Giants swept the Prince George Cougers, and the Kelowna Rockets defeated the Kamloops Blazers.
 
Calgary outscored Edmonton 15-3 in the series. Joel Broda, a fifth round pick in 2008 of the Washington Capitals, had 3 goals and 4 assists to lead the Hitman. Martin Jones made 84 of 87 shots in sweeping the Oil Kings.

Brandon won game 1 of their series 7-2 and never looked back. Jamie Benn, a fifth round pick in 2007 of the Dallas Stars, was the star of the show with 10 points in four games. Andrew Hayes made of 106 saves on 117 shots.

Kelowna outscored Kamloops 17-8 in their sweep of the Blazers. Braydon Schenn and Matt Calvert, a fifth round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2008, had four goals each. Mark Guggenberger made of 86 saves on 94 shots.

Vancouver scored 17 goals in the first two games of the series, but had to hang on in games 3 and 4 to win the series. Craig Cunningham had two goals and seven assists. Tyson Sexsmith, a third round pick of the San Jose Sharks in 2007, made 101 saves on 108 shots.

The following series are tied at 2-2: Saskatoon vs Lethbridge, Swift Current vs. Medicine Hat. Spokane is up 3-1 in their series against Seattle, while Tri-City is up 2-1 on Everett.
In the OHL playoffs, the Windsor Spitfires swept the Owen Sound Attack. The Spitfires were on fire. They did not score less than six goals in every game of the series.   Taylor Hall, the leading candidate to be the first overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, had seven goals and 5 assists in the series to lead all scorers in the OHL so far. Teammate Eric Wellwood chipped in with four goals as well.
