CHARLOTTE, NC – Charlotte edge closer to a play-off spot plus they won the GEICO CUP with a thoroughly deserved victory over rivals Norfolk Admirals. The Admirals went ahead in the first period through Brandon McMillan who opened the scoring at the 19.34 marker when he touched home a loose puck. Norfolk throw everything they could at Rob Madore but the young goalie stood his ground making 17 saves in the first period. Charlotte only managed 3 shots in the opening segment.
Madore came up big in the opening period. This rookie who played in the ECHL earlier in the season now has two huge wins under his belt as a starter for the Checkers. He even saved a penalty shot from Admirals John Mitchell.
The second period saw a complete reversal with Charlotte controlling the game. Beau Schmitz, another rookie from the ECHL, tied things up in the 16 minute with assists by David Marshall and Chris Terry. Norfolk was somewhat subdued taking only eight shots to the Checkers 18.
The third period was under a minute old when new boy Casey Pierro-Zabotel, the leading scorer in the ECHL this season put Charlotte a head with a wonderful solo goal, his first for the Checkers.
Although the shots taken in the third were fairly even with Norfolk taking 13 and Charlotte just one more the Checkers always looked like they were going to take the win. Zach Boychuk put the game out of Norfolk’s reach when he scored in the 15 minute, again Marshall assisted along with Schmitz. The fans voted Madore as the Roll Up Your Sleeves Hardest Worker of the Game.
This coming weekend Charlotte face San Antonio on Friday and Saturday at Time Warner Cable Arena
