CHRLOTTE, NC – After a Saturday evening that Charlotte wants to forget, the Checkers came back strongly on Sunday with a 4-3 win over the Lake Erie Monsters. The Checkers produced one of their best performances of the season giving them a 9-2-1 record at home.
Jon Matsumo gave the Checkers the lead towards the end of the first period after Chris Terry had a shot hit the post, Matsumo jumped on the rebound. This set off the Teddy Bear Toss promotion with fans throwing stuffed animals onto the ice. A few minutes later Drayson Bowman put Charlotte in the lead 2-0. Justin Shugg held the puck before Bowman took it over firing a shot inside the near post.
The second period was not two minutes old when Matt Carman scored the Monsters opening goal. This only spurred the Checkers on and halfway through the period Chris Terry stole the puck during a Monster power play, scoring his fifth goal of the season, putting Charlotte in the drivers seat at 3-1.
The Monsters came back in the third period with two goals by Hugh Jessiman and Greg Maudlin, making the score 3-3. Mike Murphy who was not happy with either goal because of a lack of communication, made 27 saves.
With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Chris Durno scored the winner and his third of the season, giving Charlotte a 4-3 victory. Michal Jordan shot on the Monsters goal; Durno tipped the shot over goaltender Trevor Cann.
