Checkers Mike Murphy signs contract with Spartak Moscow

CHARLOTTE, NC – Goaltender Mike Murphy will be playing in the Russian capitol next season for Moscow Spartak. Murphy spent the last two seasons with the Checkers but when the Russian team that play in the KHL came knocking he decided to take the plunge and sign on the dotted line.

Murphy made it very clear that he has really enjoyed his time in Charlotte, at 23 he felt that he needed to prove to himself, that by going to Russia he could come back to the NHL a more experienced goaltender. He felt that it was going be to difficult for him to develop in Carolina as the Canes have one of the best goalies in Cam Ward, plus his back-up Brian Boucher still has another year on his contract.

Carolina will retain Murphy’s rights as long as he is overseas this is providing they make him a qualifying offer by the end of June. If that happens he will have to go through the Carolina organization should he return to North America.

During his time in Charlotte Mike Murphy has become the Checkers all time leader in most goaltender categories. He was also a free agent this summer, a point that must have factored in his decision.
