CCHA Weekly Review for December 6

PAPILLION, NEBRASKA – After a weekend of Thanksgiving Holiday Tournaments resulted in a light conference schedule for the schools of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, the conference returned to full play this weekend featuring a couple savory match ups.  The#15 Fighting Irish travelled to number one Miami while #11 Michigan State climbed off the palm into the northernmost reaches of the “U.P.” to face Northern Michigan, and #13 Alaska faced the lowly Broncos of Western Michigan in Kalamazoo.
Lake Superior State at Bowling Green State Bowling Green, Ohio – The Lakers swept the Falcons on Saturday night for their second series sweep of the season.  Lake Superior was led by their goaltenders Brian Mahoney-Wilson and Pat Inglis who would allow a total of three points on 56 shots.
Nebraska-Omaha at Ferris State Big Rapids, Michigan – Ferris State swept the Mavericks winning 2-0 on Friday evening and 3-1 on Saturday.  Taylor Nelson allowed the Bulldogs to ease their minds allowing one goal on 57 shots.  Saturday’s game was marred by Omaha penalties as Nebraska-Omaha would receive 12 penalties, seven of which came in the third period.  With the pair of wins, the Ferris State Bulldogs have not lost in eight straight games.
Michigan at Ohio State Columbus, Ohio – If there’s any question about whether these two schools care for each other, this weekend would help put much of that to ease.  Ohio State allowed the Wolverines to tie Friday’s game in the second period before they would score three times in the third to take the win.  Michigan, not to be outdone, would use a pair of power play goals to hold off the pesky Buckeyes on Saturday splitting the series.
Alaska at Western Michigan Kalamazoo, Michigan – The Nanooks arrived into Western Michigan looking a little jet lagged.  After a 3-1 loss on Friday, Alaska could only manage a 4-4 tie on Saturday night.  Jordan Collins had two goals on Friday to lead the Broncos and scored once more on Saturday.
Notre Dame at Miami Oxford, Ohio – The number one RedHawks made easy work of the Fighting Irish on Saturday winning 4-0 with Connor Knapp earning the shut out.  Despite Miami’s sweep over the 14th ranked Irish, Miami did require a little “luck” on Friday.  Miami’s only goal came on a shorthanded effort by Joe Hartman.  The shut out for Cody Reichard was his fourth of his career.
Michigan State at Northern Michigan Marquette, Michigan – Northern Michigan had played six straight without a loss previous to Friday’s 1-0 loss against Michigan State.  The Spartans scored at 13:53 when Corey Tropp beat Brian Stewart for the game winner.  Stewart stopped 36 shots for the Wildcats in the losing effort.  On Saturday, Matt Butcher would seek his revenge as he would score in overtime to give the Wildcats the victory.  Northern Michigan won 3-2 in overtime to split the series with Michigan State.
