Carolina Hurricanes preview and outlook

RALIEGH, NC – The key to success for the Canes this is loaded up in one word—HEALTHY. Last year the Canes suffered a staggering 333 man-games due to injury, losing key players in the process, including Captain Rod Brind’Amour.   Eric Staal was the only Hurricane to play in all 82 games in another injury riddled season.   Unfortunately, this year has not had a promising start. Justin Williams suffered an Achilles injury that will keep him sidelined for four to six months.   Brind’Amour should be ready to start the season, but the burning question is will he be 100 percent?

  Reasons They Could Fail:

With the retirement of veteran defenseman, Glen Wesley and the departure of Bret Hedican, the Canes have some pretty big skates to fill.   The Hurricanes will need some defensemen that are ready to take on an attitude that shows heart and grit—not necessarily strength and size.   They will need to play an offensive-minded defense and be confident in doing just that.
Penalties—after allowing 75 power play goals last year they will need to play a very disciplined game.

Rookies/New Players to watch:
When Sutter arrived in Albany in March, his work ethic was immediately apparent, in addition to being a great player with immense talent to his new teammates. Three months ago, 19 year-old Brandon Sutter was penciled in as the Canes’ fourth-line center, and is expected to be with the team on opening day. Brandon may be the secret weapon this team needs.
Zach Boychuck has already impressed the Canes with his ability to bounce back from wrist surgery.   If his playing abilities are as impressive, we may see him in this year’s line-up.   If not, look to see him in the Spring to help the team make a strong playoff run.
How Will They Do:
The Hurricanes have not been to the playoffs for the last two seasons, making NHL history by being the first and only team to miss two consecutive seasons after winning the Stanley Cup. It would be unacceptable for them to miss three—management will do “Whatever It Takes” to get this team on top of the Southeast Division and into the playoffs this year.
