HYANNIS, Mass – The Cape Cod Bluefins snapped the Brooklyn Aviators two game winning streak with an 8-2 victory on Tuesday night at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center in Federal Hockey League action.
David Lun recorded a hat trick for Cape Cod, and Brad Surdam scored twice to pace the Bluefins’ offense in the win over Brooklyn.
Lun put Cape Cod on the board first in the opening period at the 9:08 mark after his redirection in front got past Aviators’ netminder Tommy Lee. Andrew Owsiak would quickly tie it up for Brooklyn just 3:03 later on his fifth tally of the season. The Dartmouth College product poked home a loose puck, which now gives him four goals in two games. Cape Cod though, registered the frame’s next two tallies from Lun and Surdam, to give the Bluefins a 3-1 edge after one period of play.
Power-play chances were the story for the Aviators in the second period, as they went to the man advantage seven times in the middle frame. However, steady goaltending from Wes Vesprini helped Cape Cod kill off six of the seven chances. KC Timmons registered the lone goal for the Aviators, on the power play, but it was Lun and Surdam – again – netting the two markers for Cape Cod giving the Bluefins a 5-3 lead after two.
Cape Cod (4-6-0) scored three power play goals in the third period to ice the game and seal the victory in front of their home crowd.
Lee stopped 27 shots in the loss, while Vesprini made 35 saves for his second win of the year.
Brooklyn (5-4-3) returns home on Wednesday night to take on the 1000 Islands Privateers at the Aviator Sports and Events Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 PM, and can be heard live with Aviators broadcaster Carmine Vetrano on the FHL broadcast network, powered by LiveSportsVideo.com.
